Today marks the anniversary of Sam Houston’s inauguration as the first constitutionally elected president of the Republic of Texas. Isn’t that a date all Texans should have inscribed in their calendars?
Thanks to Houston’s leadership, Texas was freed from the subjugation of Mexican president Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, and became a nation in its own right.
The grateful citizens of the new republic duly rewarded their hero by electing him their political as well as military leader.
Today, Texans still pride themselves on their acknowledgment of Houston’s deeds, and rightly so. Isn’t it a little strange, then, that there seems to be no annual celebration named Sam Houston Day?
Wouldn’t the 22nd day of October be a great day to put that right?
